Südgeorgien Inseln - der Hafen, die Stadt

Südgeorgien ist der Name einer Insel sowie einer gesamten Inselgruppe im Südatlantik und gehört, ähnlich wie die Falkland-Inseln zu Argentinien. Sie haben die Möglichkeit einen einmaligen Blick in die üppige Tier- und Pflanzenwelt, auf diesem weit abgeschiedenen Teil der Erde, kennenzulernen.

Klima

Das Klima ist aufgrund der Position zwischen dem 40. und 50. Breitengrad sehr kalt und unwirtlich. Im Sommer steigt die Temperatur selten über 10 Grad. Die Winter sind lang und unbeständig.

Sehenswürdigkeiten

Wenn Sie durch die malerischen Fjorde der Inseln kreuzen, fällt schnell auf, dass größere Sträucher und Bäume gänzlich fehlen und lediglich das auffällige Tussockgras die Landschaft säumt. Zudem wachsen noch einige Moose und Flechten in der Region.
Ein wahrliches Schauspiel ist das Nisten der tausenden Königspinguine, die ausschließlich in der Antarktis und speziell besonders auf den Südgeorgischen Inseln beheimatet sind. Diese, vom Aussterben bedrohte Tierart, lebt gemeinsam mit den Goldschopfpinguinen sowie mit den Seeelefanten und den Seebären.
Die Hauptstadt der Insel, Grytviken, kann nur drei ständige Einwohner aufweisen.
