Melbourne ist die Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Victoria und nach Sydney die zweitgrößte Stadt Australiens.Aufgrund von Erhebungen des "The Economist" ist Melbourne in den Jahren 2002, 2004 und 2005 zu der lebenswertesten Stadt der Welt gewählt worden. Das Stadtbild Melbournes, dessen historischer Queen-Victoria-Markt bis heute eine Attraktion bildet, beherrschen zahlreiche Bürohochhäuser. Sehenswerte Bauwerke sind unter anderem das State Parliament House, die Royal Exhibition Buildings, die 1968 eröffnete Börse, die Saint Patrick?s Cathedral und Flinders Street Station. Mit dem Melbourne Museum wurde im November 2000 der größte Museumskomplex der Südhalbkugel eröffnet. Zum Museumskomplex gehören weiterhin das Royal Exhibition Building, das Scienceworks Museum sowie das Immigration Museum.
