Cork ist eine Stadt im Süden Irlands und mit beinahe 120.000 Einwohnern auch die zweitgrößte Stadt nach der Hauptstadt Dublin. Oftmals wird Cork auch 'The Real Capital' genannt Der Name Corcaigh (irische Schreibweise) bedeutet übersetzt soviel wie 'Marschland' und nimmt Bezug auf die Lage der Stadt auf einer kleinen Insel in der Mündung des Flusses Lee.
Die Gründung der Stadt geht bis auf das Jahr 500 zurück und wird mit der Errichtung des ersten Klosters durch den Heiligen Finbarr begonnen. Im Jahr 1185 wurde Cork dann auch offiziell von König Johann von England das Stadtrecht per Urkunde zugesprochen.
Über lange Zeit war Cork besonders durch den Handel mit Wolle und Tierhäuten in Europa von größerer Bedeutung. Auch im 18. Jahrhundert war Cork Heimat einer bedeutenden Textilindustrie die bis heute von den großen Hafenanlagen sowie dem zweitgrößten internationalen Flughafen Irlands profitiert. Ein weiterer Exportschlager ist die traditionelle irländische Butter Kerrygold, welche im 19. Jahrhundert ihren Siegeszug durch Europa und bis in die Karibik begann. Der Hafen, den Sie im Rahmen Ihrer Kreuzfahrt anfahren werden, ist Cobh. In der Geschichte hatte sich die Stadt bereits als Auswandererseehafen während der großen Hungernot 1848 einen Namen gemacht, heut müssen Sie aber keine Angst haben während Ihrer Fahrt Hunger zu leiden.
