Bewohnt
werden die Inseln beinahe ausschließlich von verschiedenen
Expeditionsgruppen oder den Teams diverser Forschungsstationen. Von
Kreuzfahrtschiffen bzw. Expeditionsschiffen können die meisten Inseln
wenn überhaupt nur im Sommer angefahren werden. Dank des Arktisvertrages
sind allerdings auch große Teile der Süd-Shetland-Inseln für Touristen
gesperrt um die empfindliche Tier- und Pflanzenwelt zu schützen.Trotzdem
werden Sie auf ihrer Tour durch die Antarktis einige eindrucksvolle
Naturschauspiele erleben. So gibt es einige der schönsten Fjorde der
Antarktis auf den größeren der Süd-Shetland Inseln. Mit etwas Glück
können Sie auf Ihrer Kreuzfahrt sogar den ein oder anderen Wal
entdecken. Pelzrobben und Pinguine sollten aber sicherlich auf der Liste
der Attraktionen stehen, besonders wenn im Hochsommer (also Dezember
bis Januar) die ersten Pelzrobben Babys zu finden sind.
