Sehenswürdigkeiten
Die gesamte Stadt steht im Zeichen des berühmten Entdeckers Christoph Kolumbus. Der Kolumbus-Platz mit seiner imposanten Kirche und der Kolumbus-Leuchtturm, zu Ehren des 500. Jahrestags der Besiedelung erbaut, gehört zum Stadtbild.
Offiziell wurde Santo Domingo, damals noch unter dem Namen "La Nueva Isabela" von Barolomeo Kolumbus, dem Bruder des bekannten Entdeckers, besiedelt, und anschließend, nach einer Ameisenplage, 1502 neu gegründet.
Besuchen Sie den Palast des Kolumbus-Clans, das Alcázar de Colón, ein unscheinbar wirkendes, aber dennoch großes, Gebäude im spanischen Kolonialstil, das auf Besucher wartet und seit 1990 Teil des UNESCO Weltkulturerbes ist.
