Falmouth

Falmouth ist die Hauptstadt des jamaikanischen Parish "Trelawny" und ist zudem Geburtsort des gleichnamigen Gouverneurs des Parish. Die Altstadt des 7.400 Menschen beherbergenden Ortes zählt zu einer der besterhaltensten und lädt zum verweilen ein. Die georgianische Stadt wurde sorgfältig und systematisch geplant und verfügte seit der Gründung im Jahre 1769 bereits über eine fortschrittliche Leitungswasserversorgung, die selbst New York zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht hatte.

Falmouth - der Hafen, die Stadt

Falmouth

Falmouth ist die Hauptstadt des jamaikanischen Parish "Trelawny" und ist zudem Geburtsort des gleichnamigen Gouverneurs des Parish. Die Altstadt des 7.400 Menschen beherbergenden Ortes zählt zu einer der besterhaltensten und lädt zum verweilen ein. Die georgianische Stadt wurde sorgfältig und systematisch geplant und verfügte seit der Gründung im Jahre 1769 bereits über eine fortschrittliche Leitungswasserversorgung, die selbst New York zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht hatte. Die Wirtschaft florierte am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts und Falmouth wurde zu einem der wichtigsten Exporthäfen für Zuckermelasse bis der Aufschwung durch das Ende der Sklaverei einen herben Dämpfer erhielt. In jüngster Zeit wurden die historisachen Gebäude teilweise sehr aufwendig restauriert.

Ausflugstipps

Aufgrund der recht zentralen Lage ist Falmouth prädestiniert für Ausflüge. Beispielsweise zur benachbarten Stadt Montego Bay, die neben der geschichtsträchtigen Vergangenheit auch einen malerischen Strand zu bieten hat. Ebenfalls empfehlenswert ist ein Ausflug nach Ocho Rios. Die Stadt ist vorallem für die Dunn's River Fall bekannt.
