Bar Harbor

Die Stadt Bar Harbor, welche bereits 1796 gegründet wurde, enstand als Urlaubsort für die wohlhabende Oberschicht Mains. Heutzutage profitiert die Stadt, welche auf Mount Desert Island gelegen ist, von der Nähe zum Arcadia National Park und zieht nicht nur Kreuzfahrttouristen in ihren Bann. Bekannt wurde die Stadt auch durch den berühmtesten Sohn Bar Harbors, dem amerikanischen Nelson Rockefeller.

Umgebung

Die Hafenstadt liegt malerisch gelegen inmitten unberührter Natur und lädt ein zu ausgedehnten Erkundungstouren oder entspannten Spaziergängen entlang der Küstenlinie. Besonders der Arcadia National Park mit den spitzen Felsvorhängen und ausgedehnten Seen bietet mit mehr als 200km Wanderwegen mehr als genug Platz für die jährlich steigende Besucherzahl. Alternativ wird aber auch immer gerne das Whalewatching in Anspruch genommen, da man die großen Tiere dort zu fast jeder Jahreszeit finden kann. Neben den Buckelwalen gibt es auch die selteneren Finnwale sowie Glattwale. Eine weitere Küstenspezialität ist der Hummer, welcher in der gesamten Küstenregion um Maine gefischt wird.
