Kirkwall - der Hafen, die Stadt

Kirkwall ist Hauptort der Insel Mainland, der größten der schottischen Orkney, und hat etwa 6.330 Einwohner. Die Stadt liegt auf einer Landenge zwischen Ost- und West-Mainland. Von hier führen Fährverbindungen zu den meisten Inseln der nördlichen Orkney.Kirkwall ist skandinavischen Ursprungs. Im Jahre 1137 wird mit dem Bau der St. Magnus-Kathedrale begonnen, die heute das Stadtbild prägt. Erst 1468 wurde Kirkwall schottisch, als James III. die Orkney erwarb. Im darauffolgenden Jahrhundert war es Verwaltungszentrum für die Orkney- und die Shetland-Inseln.1811 wurde mit dem Ausbau des Naturhafens begonnen. Tankerness House, eines der herausragenden Stadthäuser, des Landadels ist heute das Hauptmuseum der Orkneys.In und bei Kirkwall befinden sich die nördlichsten Whisky-Destillerien Schottlands: die Highland Park Distillery und die Scapa Distillery.
