St. Peter Port - der Hafen, die Stadt

Saint Peter Port ist Haupt- und Hafenstadt von Guernsey, der zweitgrößten der britischen Kanalinseln. Die Insel ist besonders für ihre wilden Steilküsten bekannt welche einer Vielzahl von Vogelarten ein perfektes Zuhause bieten. Dementsprechend ist Guernsey ein beliebtes Urlaubsziel für viele Vogelliebhaber.

Auf Französisch, welches auch Amtssprache von Guernsey ist, heißt die Insel Saint-Pierre-Port.

In St. Peter Port leben etwa 20.000 Menschen, was ungefähr einem Drittel der Gesamteinwohnerschaft der Insel ausmacht. Die Stadt selber ist aufgeteilt in vier Kantone; den North Canton, den Canton of the South-West, den Canton of the North-West und den Canton of the South.

Sehenswürdigkeiten

Das markante Castle Cornet liegt auf der kleinen Insel Cornet Rock in unmittelbarer Nähe zu der Stadt und dem künstlich angelegten Hafen von St.-Peter-Port. Die Burganlage, welche schon im Jahr 1206 erbaut wurde, ist bis heute ein beliebter touristischer Anlaufpunkt und auch Teil vieler der organisierten Kreuzfahrt-Tagesausflüge. Das Guernsey-Museum bietet viele interessante Exponate zur geschichtlichen Entwicklung der Insel und im 'Le Dehus', einer Grabstätte, können Sie sich selber wie Indiana Jones fühlen.

Für die Strandtouristen gibt es schöne Strände in direkter Nähe zum St.-Peter-Port, namentlich Part of Belle Greve Bay, Havelet Bay, Soldiers Bay und Part of Fermain Bay.
