Auckland ist die größte Stadt Neuseelands und wird von ungefähr 50 inaktiven Vulkanen geprägt auf deren Rücken sich die Großstadt erstreckt. Ihnen verdankt die Stadt die weitläufigen Parkanlagen, die bis ins Zentrum reichen. Auckland wird oft als ?City of Sails? (?Stadt der Segel?) genannt, wegen der zahllose Yachthäfen. Westhaven Marina nahe der Auckland Harbour Bridge ist mit etwa 1.400 der größte Yachthafen der ganzen Südhalbkugel. Außerdem gibt es in keine anderen Stadt der Erde die so viele Segelboote pro Person wie in Auckland hat.Das Hafenviertel wurde in ein Lifestyle-Zentrum mit Restaurants, Wohnungen und öffentlichen Plätzen umgewandelt und bildet nun mit seinen Cafes und Bars eines der Zentren des Nachtlebens der Stadt.Zahlreiche Strände laden unter anderem zum Baden oder Surfen ein.
