Dunedin war einstmals größte und reichste Stadt des Landes, Sitz der ersten Universität Neuseelands und brachte die erste täglich erscheinende Zeitung heraus. Historisch gesehen ist Dunedin mit Sicherheit mit eines der interessantesten Orte Neuseelands. Das 1871 erbaute Larnach Castle wird gerne als das "einziges Schloss Neuseelands" bezeichnet. Die Dunedin Railway Station ist das historische Gebäude Dunedins, welches auf jedem Besucherprogramm steht und wohl schon millionenfach fotografiert wurde. Der 1906 erbaute Repräsentationsbau beherbergt heute ein Restaurant und die Sports Hall of Fame. Der Bahnhof ist Ausgangspunkt für den Taieri Gorge Railway, einer Touristeneisenbahn zur Schlucht des Taieri River und wird alljährlich einmal zum Laufsteg für die größte Modeschau der Region.
