Sie war lange Zeit Metropole der Südstaaten und bis 1788 Hauptstadt von South Carolina.Die Stadt wurde 1670 gegründet und nach dem englischen König Karl II. Charles Town benannt.Charleston war die Drehscheibe des Sklavenhandels der britischen Kolonien über die Middle Route. Nach dem Unabhängigkeitskrieg bekam die Stadt 1783 ihren heutigen Namen.
