Sitka (Sitka-by-the-Sea) ist eine Stadt mit knapp 10.000 Einwohnern in Alaska. Trotz der geringen Einwohnerzahl umfasst das Stadtgebiet dennoch mehr als 12.000 km² und ist somit die flächenmäßig größte Stadt der USA. Der Name Sitka leitet sich ab von dem tlingitischen Sheet'ká was übersetzt soviel bedeutet wie 'Leute von außerhalb".
Die ursprüngliche Besiedlung durch Europäer, in dem Fall Russen, begann schon im 18. Jahrhundert. Deren erste Frucht, die Stadt Nowo-Archangelsk, legte den Grundstein für die Entstehung des heutigen Sitka. Von 1808 bis zur Übergabe Alaskas im Rahmen der Übergabe Alaskas der Russen an die USA im Jahr 1867 war Sitka die Hauptstadt der nordamerikanischen Besitzungen Russlands.

Heutzutage ist Sitka besonders für seine malerische Umgebung, den Tourismus und den Fischfang bekannt, denn seit Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts wird der Sitka-Lachs weltweit verkauft. Auch die nicht zur Jagd freigegebene Tierwelt ist sehr gefragt. So können Sie mit etwas Glück beispielsweise im Rahmen eines Tagesausfluegs mit einem der vielen Fischerboote Braunbären und Weißkopfseeadler beobachten. Ein besonderes Highlight, welches von beinahe jedem Kreuzfahrtanbieter angeboten wird, ist das sogenannten Whale-watching.
