Christchurch - der Hafen, die Stadt

Christchurch ist eine an der Ostküste der Südinsel Neuseelands gelegene Stadt mit über 350.000 Einwohnern. Christchurch gilt als die ?englischste? Stadt Neuseelands, was sich heute noch in der Architektur nachvollziehen lässt. Der M?ori-Name der Stadt ist ?tautahi, benannt nach einem Häuptling der M?ori, der am Avon River siedelte.Eine Touristenattraktion ist zweifelsohne die restaurierte Straßenbahn, mit der man die Innenstadt im Sitzen erkunden kann.Die größte Stadt auf der Südinsel Neuseelands begrüßt den Frühling, wenn die ersten Pfuhlschnepfen nach ihren Rekordflügen aus der Arktis kommend im seichten Mündungsgebiet der beiden Flüsse Heathcote und Avon landen. Sobald die ersten der 40 Zentimeter großen Zugvögel am Strand gesichtet werden, läuten die Glocken der Kathedrale am nächsten Tag um 12 Uhr Mittag Sturm. Jeden Herbst werden sie liebevoll verabschiedet.
